Story:
DRIVING SCHOOL is a drama which portrays a relationship between two people: a Driving Instructor and a Woman Candidate taking driving lessons. It is a profound minimalist study of the relationship between a man and a woman in contemporary society. The story covers the period of time between the moment the Driving Instructor and the Woman Candidate first meet and the moment when the Woman Candidate fails her driving test for the first time. The flow of the story finds its pattern in the sequence of driving lessons as preparation for a driving test; i.e. getting to know the basic functions of a motor vehicle, starting a car on a slope using a handbrake, driving on a side road in an uninhabited area, driving through a roundabout, parallel parking,… One scene – one lesson. This seeming outer dryness will be the framework of the inner “story” of the film: the characters gradually grow closer, start opening up to each other and closing again once they find out they have gone too far with their sincerity, but that does not end their process of opening up. In what way this process is going to develop depends largely on the rehearsals with the actors since the film will largely interfere with their intimate space. The film is a study of faces – faces which express everything that this film needs – the rocks we hit upon when we dive into the depths of a human soul. In the formal sense, the film will deal with reductions of all means of expression usually used in a film to a minimum. The whole action of the film is namely reduced to the car cabin. When we look at the subject matter, DRIVING SCHOOL wants to answer the question: is there, among all this nonsense of the so-called contemporary world, under the load of banality and disturbing factors one is constantly buried beneath and which sit on one’s psyche and paralyze one’s senses… has there, under all that junk which has been accumulating for years and years, survived anything that could be called love? And if it has survived, what has it been feeding on all these years?
